Ontario Purple Martin Fledgling Success

2003-2018

According to our association’s citizen scientists over 40,297 martins have fledged since we started monitoring colonies for fledgling success What a great job they do in hosting and caring for the martins! (updated Jan 3, 2019)

  • 2003 – 1094 fledged, as reported from 21 member sites
  • 2004 – 1372 fledged, as reported from 23 member sites
  • 2005 – 1042 fledged, as reported from 19 member sites
  • 2006 – 1633 fledged, as reported from 24 member sites
  • 2007 – 2172 fledged, as reported from 27 member sites
  • 2008 – 1501 fledged, as reported from 15 member sites
  • 2009 -est. 750 data not collected due to weather related losses of 30-50% by most members
  • 2010 – 1851 fledged, as reported from 22 member sites
  • 2011- 2337 fledged, as reported so far  from 30 sites
  • 2012- 2595 fledged, as reported so far  from 35 sites 
  • 2013- 2389 fledged as reported so far from 35 sites/ weather related losses were reported this summer (rain storms, wind)
  • 2014 – 4083 fledged, as reported so far from 51 sites ( 990 pair) on December 12. (4.12 young per nest)
  • 2015- 4203 fledged, as reported so far from 61 sites (1168 pairs) on December 15. (3.59 young per nest)
  • 2016-4316 fledged,as reported so far  from 48 sites (1245 pairs) on April 30, 2017. (3.59 young / nest)
  • 2017-5512 fledged, as reported so far from 54 sites(1222 pairs) on Mar 22,2018 (4.51 young/nest)
  • 2018-3447 fledged, as reported so far from 30 sites (734 pairs) on Jan 3, 2019 (4.69 young/nest)
