Purple Martins Return to Point Pelee Roost

After visiting the Pelee Roost on 07/30/2019, it has been quite interesting to actually see the staging areas along Mersea Rd. D and Mersea Rd. E. grow in size and numbers. Purple Martins are staging in Poplar and Willow trees before entering the Roost area just before dusk. The 1500 or so martins continue to put on a show in great numbers as they fly over with their young just after sunset. Since the days are getting shorter and the sunset earlier, it is best to arrive at least 45 minutes before the martins arrive to see the actual activity. Check the sunset time before arriving at the roost. The numbers of swallows arriving will continue to grow over the next two weeks. The photo below is a doppler image of the Swallows leaving the Roost this morning at 6:00 a.m. August 2, 2019.

The ring will increase in size as more birds arrive at the Roost. If you need further directions on how to get to the roost contact martinman@hotmail.com. We will be visiting the site each week until the end of August. Come out and witness a truly incredible phenomenon as it grows in numbers from week to week.
